EV charger installation

Charging off the power point in the garage works, right up until it does not. A proper 7kW wall charger on its own circuit puts in roughly three times the range per hour, and you stop worrying about a lead running hot overnight.

Power point versus wall charger

This is the part most people want in plain numbers, so here it is.

  1. Standard power point. Roughly 10 to 15km of range per hour. A flat battery takes a couple of days to fill.
  2. 7kW wall charger. Roughly 40km of range per hour. Plug in at night, full by morning, every time.
  3. The safety difference. A power point circuit was designed for a kettle or a vacuum, not eight hours at near full load. That is where heat problems start, especially in older Wentworthville and Toongabbie homes on original wiring.
Charge when power is cheapest

Most modern chargers are app-controlled, so charging can be scheduled for off-peak hours. On a time-of-use plan that is the difference between charging cheap and charging at peak rates without realising. We set the schedule up with you before leaving.

How the install runs

Site check and load assessment

We look at your switchboard, the distance from the board to where you park, and whether the existing supply can carry the extra load. That last part matters and gets skipped a lot.

Fixed price before starting

You get a price covering the charger, the cable run, the dedicated circuit and the board work. If a switchboard upgrade is needed first, you hear that at quote stage, not on install day.

Install on a dedicated circuit

The charger goes on its own circuit with its own protection, cable run neatly, unit mounted where you will actually use it rather than behind where the car sits.

Test, set up, hand over

Full test, charger connected to your phone, off-peak schedule set, and a walkthrough so you know how to use it. Certificate of Compliance supplied.

Common questions

How much faster is a wall charger than a power point?

A standard power point trickles in roughly 10 to 15km of range an hour. A 7kW wall charger does roughly 40km an hour, so about three times quicker. Most people go from charging overnight and still being short, to being full by morning every time.

Can I just use the power point in my garage?

You can, but a normal power point circuit was never designed to run at near full load for eight hours straight. Old wiring and shared circuits are where the heat problems show up. A dedicated circuit removes that risk.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade first?

Sometimes. If the board is full, or still on ceramic fuses, it needs sorting before an EV circuit goes in. We check the board as part of the quote so you know up front rather than on install day.

Can I set it to charge on cheaper off-peak power?

Yes. Most modern chargers are app-controlled, so charging can be scheduled for whenever your plan is cheapest. We set that up with you before leaving.

How long does the install take?

A straightforward install is usually half a day. Long cable runs, a switchboard upgrade, or three-phase work can push it to a full day. You are told which one yours is at quote stage.
